We have been created to live in relationship with God. Sin broke that relationship and over time man’s understanding of God has become distorted. As a result the world is full of spiritual experiences as people try to regain their connection with God. However, only God can make a way back to Himself. He has done this through Jesus who said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through me.” In Christ we experience spirituality the way God intended.
The only part of creation that God declared not good was the individual condition of Adam. God created Eve as his helper or rescuer, and what did she rescue Adam from? His aloneness. Sin has corrupted man’s desire for relationships. Either by using people for selfish desires, or becoming isolated. God’s will is that we find others of faith and love one another deeply in Christ. You can be a Christian apart from the body of Christ, you just can’t be a spiritually healthy one.
God put Adam and Eve in the garden to tend the garden, multiply themselves, and have dominion over the world. They were to tend to these things for God’s glory and for the needs of others. Sin has corrupted man’s need for purpose and has turned it into competition, selfish gain, and self promotion, or depression, nihilism, and hopelessness. In Christ man’s purpose has been restored. In Christ we have been redeemed to give God glory in everything we do and love others into the Kingdom. We call that discipleship.
